Presentation of COLOSS by Dr. Geoff Williams

In recent years, many beekeepers in the northern hemisphere have annually witnessed a high number of honey bee colonies dying. These deaths pose a significant threat to global food security since honey bees, along with numerous other insect species, provide essential pollination services to agriculture.

COLOSS monitoring program collects data on these deaths to supply relevant information and advice to stakeholders, including government policymakers. There remain substantial gaps in understanding why colonies are dying at such alarming rates. Factors such as the Varroa destructor, other pests and parasites, environmental changes, and a multitude of influences on honey bee health internationally contribute to this crisis. The most effective way to enhance bee health is through an international, coordinated approach, exemplified by initiatives like COLOSS.
